The coupling came apart.

Production and comprehension were coupled for fifty years. Then they weren't.

Somewhere in your shop this week, more was produced than anyone read — read in the sense of followed closely enough to vouch for. Code that shipped, a migration that ran, an integration that now sits in production: generated faster than the people accountable for it could take it in. That is not a lapse in diligence. It is arithmetic, and the arithmetic runs one way.

For fifty years, two quantities moved together so reliably that no one named them apart: how much you produced, and how much you understood. They were coupled by a plain fact — you could not ship what no one had written, and writing something forced a person to understand it, at least enough to get it written. Output passed through comprehension on its way out the door. The bottleneck was also the guarantee.

That coupling has come apart. Producing an artifact costs almost nothing now. Understanding one costs what it always did, because no one has been issued a faster mind. The two quantities run on two clocks, and the distance between them widens on its own, every week, whether or not anyone is watching it.

What widens is a debt. It is free until the day you need the understanding you never built — the day something breaks, has to change, or has to be defended to someone right to ask. Up to that day it costs nothing and shows nothing. On that day the balance is called in full. And unlike the technical debt you can see in the code, this one lives in the absence of cognition: there is nothing in the repository to point at, because the thing missing is the understanding no one ever formed.

The reasonable objection is that surely you'd notice — you have tests, reviews, metrics that go green or red. But every one of those instruments reads something else. Passing tests certify that lines ran, not that the right behavior was checked. Green pipelines certify the build. Velocity is the symptom worn as a badge. And the metrics that claim to show where knowledge sits — who could leave before a project stalls — compute that from who authored the code, in a world where authoring no longer means understanding. The calm they report is the dangerous part.

So the position is this. The debt is already on your books. It grows without anyone deciding to take more on. And nothing you currently own shows the balance, because the balance is an absence, and absences do not render on a dashboard.

That absence is the reason this company exists.
